Jurassic Monkeys
Behind the scenes of this photo
Taken at Monkey Creek, Fiordland National Park, on the South Island of New Zealand on April 3rd, 2015
What a lovely morning this was at Monkey Creek in New Zealand. With steam billowing off the steep walled mountains and no sounds except the brontosauri calling to each other, it felt like a moment from 100 million years ago. There was even a moment when a stegosaurus came down to the creek to drink. At least I think it was a stegosaurus, though I suppose it could’ve been a kea…

Hi Joshua. I am a dedicated follower and have just seen the Monkey Creek image. If I’m not mistaken this is looking back toward the Divide and Hollyford turnoff. I worked on the Milford Road for several years and saw it in all its many moods. This image captures the essence of Fiordland beautifully. I look forward to your return to NZ and would love to participate in one of your workshops.
Cheers
Grant
Hey Grant,
Thank you so much! You are exactly correct: this is a few hundred meters downstream from where Monkey Creek meets the upper Hollyford, looking downstream toward the Divide. I can’t imagine the beauty you’ve seen working on the road for several years. At this point in my life I’ve been on the road perhaps two dozen times and every single time the mood and weather is different, but the beauty is always spectacular. What an experience to know the road as intimately as you must.
I’ll be back in New Zealand next April (2016) for another workshop, and we still have a few spaces on that one. Here are all the details if you’d like to take a look: http://www.seatosummitworkshops.com/shop/photography-workshops/new-zealand-photography-tour-workshop/
And feel free to give me a shout if I can answer any questions for you.
Cheers,
Josh
