Hey everyone, thanks so much for participating! There were some really weird, interesting, and cool facts listed here. A few of my favorites were the one about the female ferret, that a group of tigers is called an ambush, and that a pistol shrimp is one loud crustacean. Good stuff!
To determine the winner of the drawing I assigned everyone a number, 1-45, then used random.org to select a random winner. Random.org fed me #42, which is Clif Hart. Congrats, Clif!
Some sharks lay eggs, others give birth to live young.
Gorillas are very intelligent, and they share with us a full range of emotions: love, hate, fear, grief, joy, greed, generosity, pride, shame, empathy, and jealousy. They laugh when they are tickled and cry when they are sad or hurt. Gorillas cry with sounds, not tears.

I’m often asked how much my 110 pound dog “Bandit” (a Bernese Mountain Dog), sheds his coat. My stock answer is “not much – only twice a year…constantly between January and June, then again between July and December”! My other best friend, my wife, follows him around with a vacuum cleaner. Both are amazing.
Once paired, bald eagles remain together until one dies.
Spanish Dancer nudibranchs (Hexibranchus sanguineus)lay their eggs on coral reefs in a conspicuous ribbon-like pattern that looks like a red rose. The beautiful red color of the egg mass advertises the extreme toxicity of the eggs to potential predators.
I love horses.
I’m amazed by how the Emperor Penguin endures temperatures down to -40C and winds up to 144 km/h just to breed and keep their eggs safe. And does so for 64 days! That’s even more stubborn than the most hardened nature photographers 🙂
A group of tigers is called an ambush or streak.
The Tiger pulls in it’s claws while walking, when it wants to hide it’s trails.
My amazing 10 week old lab/retriever pup, Odie. He’s an avid swimmer, swinger, (kids playground), kayaker and tomorrow he’ll try wakeboarding!
The Sedge Warbler, can fly 4000 kilometres without any stopover. That’s about 2500 miles. This bird weighs 23 grams when he begins the journey and only 9 grams when he arrives! I love our birds and I’m amazed by our migratory birds.
The Platypus are the only mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth. It is the sole living representative of its family (Ornithorhynchidae) and genus (Ornithorhynchus), though a number of related species have been found in the fossil record. It is one of the few venomous mammals, the male platypus having a spur on the hind foot that delivers a venom capable of causing severe pain to humans.
My miniature foxy/chihuahua Bella, LOVES to chase bubbles thus displaying a child-like innocence most of us wish we still had.
Wolves:
Fact: Black wolves don’t occur naturally.
A 2008 study at Stanford University found that the mutation responsible for black fur occurs only in dogs, so black wolves are the result of gray wolves breeding back with domestic canines. The mutation is a dominant trait, like dark hair in humans, and is passed down to the majority of offspring. It is not entirely clear what benefit black fur has for the animals; they do not seem to be more successful hunters, but do show a marked improvement in immunity to certain infections. Black wolves are far more common in North America than they are in the rest of the world.
My chilli dog can make me feel on any kind of day when I show up at home and he greets me at the door like the 2 year old that he is with so much enthusium, its contagious.
I love the lemur. It likes to sun bathe in the morning to warm up and it looks like it is wotshipping the sun.
The hummingbird is the only bird that can fly both backward and forward s, and will visit up to 1,000 flowers a day for nectar. Your fabulous image would be “HummingbirdHeaven”

The pistol shrimp is one of the loudest animals on the planet, even louder than a jet.
Sharks can detect magnetic fields that sorround them!!!!!..including that little voltage variation caused by your muscles moving…
The Bald Eagle builds the largest nest of any North American bird…up to 13 ft deep, 8.2 ft wide, and 1.1 tons in weight.
Animals generate 30 times more waste than humans which is 1.4 billion tons every year.
The eagle, symbol of the U.S., has extremely keen eyesight (up to 3.6 times human acuity for the martial eagle) which enables it to spot potential prey and his potential photographer from a very long distance giving rise to spectacular poses at just the right angle if he so desires!!
There is a deer called Reeve’s Muntjac,which is a size of a dog. It is found in some parts of Asia and England and it actually barks like a dog.
Cats are curious, it sometimes gets them into trouble.
Humans can take great photos
Red pandas are gray when they are born! (They have their adult fur and colors by 90 days though).
The mimic octopus not only imitates shapes and textures of other creatures, but will mimic their motions and move across the sea floor as they would.
I would have to says my two rescue dogs, Bo and Rusty. They are the best of buds and they are loyal and a little onry. Recused animals are the best. They know that they have been given a second chance.
The sperm whale’s clicking vocalization is the loudest sound produced by any animal.
Roseate Spoonbills stand 85 cm tall and have a 1.3 m wingspan.
Sure wish we had birds as striking as this one in Kentucky!
Sometimes chickens have large talons.
Amazing Fact: If a female ferret goes into heat but can’t get any sex, she will die. Crazy huh?
Savannah Cats can jump over an average person’s head.
Horses are part of the genus “Equus” which goes back 1.8 million years to the early Pleistocene.
Bears have a uncanny memory, distinct personalities, poor eyesight- yet can smell odors up to a mile away. Love your photography!
My favorite animal is my dog, Bono 🙂 Amazing fact: I convinced my husband to get a dog by promising to give it a U2-related name!
Dolphins (most likely) do not have a sense of smell.
