What kind of stories are told best with a 17-50mm on a crop sensor?

All Topics

This is an incredibly versatile focal range, the equivalent of about 27-75 on a full-frame camera. With this you can shoot so many different kinds of scenes, from close up wide angles, to portraits, to street scenes, maybe even some wildlife (if it’s close). Here’s what I’d recommend: find a scene that has an interesting foreground and background. Then shoot that same scene at 17 mm and at 50mm, keeping the same foreground and background (you’re going to have to move forward and backward in the scene to do this). Then compare those images and see how the feel of the photo changes, and what each one emphasizes. This is going to help you build your intuition about what kind of compositions work well for the scenes you like to shoot.
