GND in software vs. GND filters?

All Topics

When possible I recommend using the graduated filter tools in the software rather than the actual physical filters. This is simply because these tools are much more flexible in post processing. The main exception to this for me is when shooting at the beach around sunrise or sunset. In these cases I love using the physical filters. This is because I’m usually targeting a very specific shutter speed, typically in the 1/2″-2″ range. That might not always be possible without a filter depending on the ambient light levels. Of course you can bracket shots as well but if the waves are moving in between shots then it might be difficult to blend these shots seamlessly. A filter allows me to get a good exposure with the shutter speed I’m targeting.
