About Josh

Originally born in San Jose in 1981, I moved with my family to the quaint, cowpokey town of Sonora when I was still a wee tyke. Located in gold rush country in the heart of the Sierra Nevada foothills, Sonora provided me with endless opportunities for outdoor pursuits, which of course I took for granted and often ignored. It wasn’t until 1999, when I moved to the concrete-clad megalopolis of Los Angeles to purse my education in engineering, that I realized that trees and mountains really are precious commodities. While there, I took every chance I could get to spend time in the wonderfully clean mountain air and granite cathedrals of the Sierras.   Ever since then I’ve been getting out and exploring as many neat places as I can, from the high sierra, to New Zealand, to Mongolia.

My studies in engineering ultimately led to a job designing autonomy and fault protection systems in communications satellites for Boeing. While it was a good job, it didn’t really give me the freedom I needed to pursue the life I wanted to live.

In 2008 I made a drastic change: I left my job at Boeing and started my own nature photography business. Since then I’ve met countless people, shared lots of stories, traveled to places near and far, and even sold a few photos.

The one thing I’ve found really amazing is the personal connections with people my photographs bring about. People tell me all about the yearly backpacking trips they would take past Cathedral Peak, or through the Little Lakes Valley; they talk to me about their African safaris; or they tell me about the places they dream of going. It’s really neat to see all these wonderful moments in my life reflected in the lives of the folks who view my work.

This blog is another way I’m trying to reach out and connect with people.  My hope is that I show a more personal side to my photography as well as help other people become better at creating their own images.  To that end, please look through the pages in the sidebar, and hopefully you’ll find something to connect with.
